When his family forbids their marriage due to class differences, Devdas turns to alcohol and seeks solace in the company of Chandramukhi, a graceful courtesan. Caught between his love for Paro and his growing dependence on drink, Devdas spirals into self-destruction as the three central characters navigate their complicated relationships and the rigid social constraints of their time.
