Story
In the mid-1970s, Charles Sobhraj poses as a wealthy gem dealer and travels across the "hippie trail" in Asia. He targets young backpackers, winning their trust with his charm and fake generosity. Aided by his devoted girlfriend, Marie-Andrée Leclerc, and his loyal associate, Ajay Chowdhury, Charles drugs and robs the vulnerable travelers, stealing their passports and identities. For a while, he easily evades the authorities and lives a luxurious life in Bangkok. However, his crimes catch the attention of Herman Knippenberg, a determined Dutch diplomat investigating the sudden disappearance of a young European couple. Despite facing massive bureaucratic obstacles and danger, Herman teams up with a brave neighbor to gather vital evidence against the dangerous criminal. The story follows a long international chase as the authorities slowly close in on Charles.
