Story

Filmmaker Joris Ivens explores the Chilean port city of Valparaíso through a poetic documentary lens. Built across 42 hills, the city carries the weight of its maritime glory while grappling with present-day hardship. The film weaves together street scenes, daily routines, and glimpses of the city's storied past, examining the tension between its once-prosperous history and current reality. Through shifts between black and white and colour photography, it captures both the struggles and resilience of those living in this layered urban landscape.
