Story

Set in a military barracks, four young soldiers prepare for deployment to Vietnam. As they await their orders, tensions simmer beneath the surface when personal revelations force the group to confront their own biases and assumptions about each other. The film explores how prejudice and fear create friction among men bound together by circumstance, examining the human conflicts that emerge when soldiers are stripped of their usual defenses.

Why watch

  • Robert Altman's unflinching examination of prejudice and masculinity in a confined setting
  • Matthew Modine, Michael Wright, and David Alan Grier deliver nuanced performances as conflicted soldiers
  • A character-driven war drama that prioritizes intimate human conflict over action sequences

Good for: Viewers interested in serious, dialogue-heavy dramas exploring social tensions; not recommended for family viewing due to the mature thematic content.
