Story

Set in postwar Paris, this film follows a celebrated poet whose work has fallen out of favour with the city's younger intellectuals. Caught between his devotion to his wife and an attraction to an enigmatic woman, he becomes drawn into a dangerous pursuit that blurs the boundaries between the living world and the realm beyond death.

Why watch

  • A fantasy-drama from Jean Cocteau, one of cinema's most imaginative filmmakers
  • Features Jean Marais and María Casares in a tale of love and obsession
  • Explores themes of art, desire and mortality through a unique romantic lens

Good for: Viewers interested in classic European cinema and philosophical fantasy-dramas; not specifically positioned as family viewing.
