Story

Filmmaker Jørgen Leth embarks on an expansive 6,000-kilometre train journey across China in 1984, accompanied by a cinematographer and sound recordist. Rather than imposing a predetermined narrative, the film observes the country with open curiosity. Along the railway route, ordinary moments and varied landscapes unfold before the camera. The documentary prioritises the sensory details—visual and sonic impressions—collected throughout this extended expedition, inviting viewers into a meditative exploration of place and people encountered during the travels.

Why watch

  • A distinctive documentary approach to China by acclaimed filmmaker Jørgen Leth
  • Extensive train journey across the country captures authentic everyday scenes
  • Contemplative documentary style emphasises visual and audio storytelling
