On the edge of the Gobi Desert in Northwest China, a former stunt motorcyclist named Lang returns to his failing hometown after being released from prison. Upon his arrival, he finds that many residents have moved away, leaving behind a large number of stray animals roaming the empty streets. In preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics, the local authorities launch a massive campaign to clear the town of unregistered animals. Lang soon joins the local dog-capturing squad to make a living. During his patrols, he crosses paths with a fierce black dog that has a bounty on its head for biting several residents. Instead of turning the animal in, Lang forms an unexpected bond with the solitary creature. Together, the two outcasts embark on a healing journey as they navigate the harsh desert environment and face vengeful figures from Lang's troubled past.
